Curious about designing for the book business? Would you like to see your work appear in publications like The New York Review of Books and The Chronicle Review? Would you like to see it circulate among an audience of over 3.5 million people--including representatives of some of the biggest media in America, publishers, booksellers, and individuals from coast to coast?
The University Press of Florida is pleased to announce the establishment of a design internship for the Spring 2009 semester. The intern will be based in our marketing department, and will have a chance to work on trade ad, flyer and catalog design. He/She will work closely with and be supervised by the Advertising and Direct Mail Manager, and will have the chance to work with the press's two full-time designers (who have over 40 years combined experience in art and graphic design at publishing houses).
For those of you who are interested in learning more about the publishing industry, this is an excellent opportunity to experience the pace and dynamic of a business that is largely seasonal with peak times in the Fall and Spring. That being said, the University Press of Florida is a mid-size press, and, though we work hard, we enjoy a laid-back camaraderie that you won't find at larger publishers. We can offer both a flexible schedule and a great working environment.
Most importantly, the University Press of Florida has been the starting point for many careers: In the past decade, eight of our interns have gone on to work for major publishing houses in Washington D.C. and New York City. We know that the on-the-job experience you gain with UPF is going to impress potential future employers.
This unpaid internship will be eligible for three hours of course credit, and the intern will be expected to work 10-15 hours per week this Spring semester. The candidate must know InDesign, and experience with Photoshop and PageMaker would be helpful.
