Graphic Artist Needed
July 17th, 2007
Kook Wear is a highly motivated company with an environmental conscience. Our goal is to design and produce affordable, high-quality organic apparel for the action sports industry. Our designs are inspired by action sports and the environment. Most of our clothing is intended to be light-hearted but we will not hesitate to use our medium to send a message.
What do we need from you? Well, due to the need for quick concept to production turnaround, we need assistance with digital artwork. We have excellent sketches of our concepts on paper, but require the aid of someone familiar with digital arts to transform these into digital form via Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, etc. This will enable our creative director to focus on perfecting all our concepts. We would also be willing to allow you to submit your own designs to us for approval and inclusion in our clothing line.
What are we offering? We would maintain the rights to anything you produced for us. However, we would welcome you to use this opportunity to build your portfolio. We will also pay you of course. If these terms sound like something we can agree on and you can see yourself feeling the Kook Wear culture, we’d love to discuss things further. Please, follow up with us at info@kook-wear.com.

this is a bad deal.
designers, please always work for money, not for “accepted” designs… if you don’t value your service, nobody will.
thank you.

We might of miss-communicated what we are looking for. Trust me, we pay and we value designers, many of the people involved with Kook Wear are actually designers. As a startup company it is hard to find good quality work at decent prices and thus we are turning to the student market.
We think it might be a win-win situation. A young artist with out many projects now has an opportunity to build their portfolio and at the same time we have an opportunity to get decent work done at a reasonable price.
When we say reasonable price; that typically ends up being about $15 per hour (don’t quote me on that, just a quick estimate). Last time I checked, that is a pretty good rate for a student artist.
If you have any suggestions on a better system or a better way to find young artist please let us know. We are new at outsourcing are design work and are just testing the waters.

my apologies, it just read like you would only pay if a design was selected… as in, the student designs first and then you’ll see if you like it. that is a mild form of design student abuse… and i am (possibly over) protective of them.
typically you find the talent you like based on a portfolio, and then pay accordingly. $15/hour is good when they are working 40 hours a week. for contract work, the price should go up a bit. better yet, setting a flat fee for design keeps everyone happy… you need not worry about a novices hours and they know precisely what they’ll get.
having reviewed 70+ portfolios over the last week while searching for designers to work at my firm, i have come to realize that florida has one of the best programs around.
